Breaking Barriers: First-Gen Student Excels in Public Health at UNTHSC
For many first-generation college students, the path to higher education is paved with challenges—but also incredible resilience. Brianna Lewis, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, is a shining example of what determination and passion can achieve. Today, she stands out as a successful graduate student in the UNT Health program at The University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC), focusing on epidemiology.
Brianna’s journey into public health didn’t follow a traditional route. Growing up in a household without a history of college attendance, she was often left to navigate academic pathways on her own. Despite this, her innate curiosity and love for research became guiding lights. “I always wanted to understand the ‘why’ behind health disparities,” she shared. That sense of inquiry eventually led her to pursue an undergraduate degree in biology and, later, a deeper commitment to public health.
At UNTHSC, Brianna found both a supportive environment and the tools to transform her interests into action. Her focus in epidemiology aligns with her desire to uncover root causes of health issues and improve outcomes in underrepresented communities. She has contributed to research projects addressing maternal health, chronic disease prevention, and community health education.
What sets Brianna apart is not just her academic success, but her leadership and advocacy. She actively participates in student organizations, mentors incoming students, and speaks at local outreach events to encourage others—especially those from underserved backgrounds—to consider careers in public health.
Her journey underscores the importance of representation in health sciences. By breaking barriers as a first-generation student, Brianna is helping shape a more inclusive future for public health. Her story is not only one of personal triumph but also a reminder of the impact that education, perseverance, and community support can have.
As she nears the completion of her MPH, Brianna hopes to continue her work in epidemiology, eventually influencing public policy and expanding access to preventive care. Her vision is clear: to be a voice for the voiceless and a force for equitable health outcomes.
Brianna Lewis exemplifies how dedication and purpose can redefine possibilities—not just for herself, but for the communities she serves. Her path from being the first in her family to attend college to excelling in public health is both inspiring and transformative.
